Tracce is a visual catalog that collects 7,394 satellite images taken during the ski seasons from 2016 to 2024

The subject of these images is 56 ski resorts in Lombardy and Piedmont, where most of the slopes are below 2,000 meters. The images, organized into a collective narrative, depict the environmental impact of the ski areas and aim to create a space for debate and counter-narratives about the current winter tourism system, which is almost entirely centered on downhill skiing monoculture made possible by artificial snowmaking.

my contribution

In this project, I worked on the data related to Piedmont, automating some scripts to make the system implementable for other regions as well. The data comes from integrating OpenStreetMap and OpenNSKiMap datasets, while the satellite images are retrieved via API from the Copernicus portal.
