Earth Bits

MAAT, 2021

A data-driven immersive experience to raise collective awareness about the climate crisis.
The installations translate the impact of climate change into visual and sound. Each module addresses a specific theme: one features a video built from ESA satellite data; another uses data visualization animations to represent the energy consumption of Portuguese cities. The experience concludes with a 'CO₂ mixer', which allows users to calculate their carbon footprint and transform the data into sound and visual, making their personal impact on the world tangible.

my contribution
Using environmental data provided by the Copernicus project (temperature, NO₂, CO₂, wind), I created a parametric video aimed at representing the impact of climate change on Earth, in collaboration with ESA and our internal team. The piece was projected onto a 5-meter-wide wall.To produce the video, I did not use traditional editing or animation software, as the goal was to build a parametric structure capable of automatically updating as the data changed, without requiring manual intervention. I developed the entire system using vvvv, a visual programming environment that allowed me to dynamically manage timelines, animations, and 3D scenes. The system includes animatable 3D models such as Earth and satellites.
